Confession of a Dust Bowl farmer
If you ever wanted to add a more emotioal or humanistic aspect to a lesson, notecard confessions are the way to do it. You can use this in many classes. In history, your students can write from the point of a view of a historic figure. In an English class, the students can write from the main protagonist point of view. I am an agricultureal teacher and I would use this when doing a lesson on historic events or the life of different agriculturealists. In the Video above I created a notecard confession about a farmer during the Dust Bowl. kansas went through a tragic event history know as the Dust Bowl. For students to truly understand what it was like it is easier to get a primary source. They can understand the hardship that farmers went through.
For this this video I combines index cards and an IPad. First you need to pick a topic that you are knowledge able about or you can research. You need to get into the shoes of the person unless you are the person, then it's easier. For mine I intently wrote with not the best hand writing as farmers during that time were not the best educated. When writing the card I made sure not to put to many words on one card. This can make the reading to much and have the video run to long. After the cards were written I took photos of them on my iPad. Once they were on there I used the app Spark Video. This allowed me to set length on how long you can see each card. It also adds music that can add a new element to the video. Music can increase the emotion effect. Just have fun with it. Let your student create and learn.
